Keeping Your Kids Safe Online

With the huge amount of information on the internet today, there is no telling what can be dug up. The internet provides a gigantic platform for almost every single form of anything to exist, and this includes pornography. And despite how wonderfully extensive the internet is, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you want your young children to have access to these kinds of sites.

So how do you protect your home computers and other multitudes of devices from allowing your children to view this type of dangerous material? Well there are plenty of ways, and its important to note that although pornography has been around for years and years, it was much more recently, as of the digital revolution, where it became so accessible. The grip on who and where could access what was loosened up tenfold with the use of computer.

Home computers are the number one way that children might have easy access to pornographic sites, however there are plenty of settings you can change that will help block these from popping up. With PCs using Windows 7 or higher, you can enable the settings right from the desktop. Go to Start then Control Panel. Choose User Accounts, Family Safety, and Setup Parental Controls to control what children can see online. You can choose whether to set restrictions for one or all of the user accounts.

Mac operating systems can be kept equally as safe, and Safari 3.0 (which is an easily navigable browser for both Windows and Apple computers) makes it easy to set controls of who can see what online. If you utilize google, you can access gobs of information including plenty of instructional videos that will help you learn how to set parental controls up, including what types of searches can be made, how to control your child’s time online, and how to fully monitor your child’s time online.

Plenty of other devices in the home allow access to the internet as well, including the Nintendo Wii, DSi and DSi XL, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Many of these consoles are created as multi-purpose consoles, providing access to the internet and movies as well as the games created for them. In addition, plenty of other home devices – even some that we carry around daily – including iPhones, iPads and iPods are all potential platforms through which children can access (or be exposed to) pornographic sites. Again, be sure to use Google to find out the best ways to keep this inappropriate material as far away from your children as possible.
