When you see pimples on the chin of your baby you may wonder if it is acne, the answer is that it could very well be acne. Sometimes acne will be present as soon as the child is born or it may begin to develop very soon after birth. It looks about the same as adult or teenage acne.
External things that might trigger this kind of acne are baby formula and spit-up that gets on the baby’s skin, if the baby’s blanket is too rough or it is washed in a harsh detergent, this can be a trigger for acne. Acne in babies is caused by certain hormones that the mother passes to the infant in the last portion of the sometimes these hormones causes the mother to also have a breakout as well. There are other external things that can cause acne, baby spit up and the formula that the child drinks may cause this as well. Things like using the wrong detergent that is too harsh or a rough blanket have also been known to aggravate and cause acne.
Baby acne as well as milia usually goes away on its own with no treatment required, however there are those rare instances when acne stays around for quite a few months maybe even longer, in these cases doctors will usually prescribe a medicated treatment, do not use the regular acne products that are often sold in pharmacies. These are not for a baby’s delicate skin and will do more harm than good.
The truth is that parents are often more upset about the acne than the child, in fact first time parents are usually the ones that panic and think that their baby may have a disease if that isn’t the case they may think it takes away from the cuteness of their baby. The child is usually unaware and quite content. Always talk about what is bothering you with your pediatrician so he or she can help you understand exactly what is happening.
