Have you noticed that your child likes to draw, sits for hours and enthusiastically displays something on a sheet of paper?Do not worry if his/her drawings are not perfect. Drawing is not only one of the most favorite child’s activities, but also a very useful developing process. While drawing, your child’s personality is developed and formed. As parents, your task is to help your children to develop and improve their artistic abilities. Here are a few tips on how you can do this most effectively.
First, your child should have all necessary stuff for the classes. Moreover, all creative materials should be bright and high-quality, so your child would like to work with them. If your child still does not know how to use a brush, paints or other art materials you need to show him or her how to do it accurately. Dip the brush into the paint and draw something yourself, then ask your child to try.Show him/her that if you mix paints, you can get other colors. Teach him/her how to hold a pencil and how to make different shadings. Explain that the shading should not extend beyond the outlines of the drawing. By having learned how to work with creative art materials, your child will be able to create neat drawings, and this is the key to success.
Tip two: avoid criticism. Of course, you want everything to be perfect, but do not rush to correct. You’d better praise, encourage and show sincere interest in your child’s drawings. If your child shows you his/her work, pay attention to it, point out successful details so that your child would want to draw more and more. You must create an atmosphere of trust, and excellence will come later.
Third, show your child non-traditional painting techniques. They are real fun and maintain interest in drawing lessons. In addition, they result in very interesting works that will help your child to believe in his/her success. There are many non-traditional painting techniques. One of them is blot drawing when different colors are dripped on a sheet of paper, and then somebody blows through a straw to spread colors in different directions. Blots of various shapes appear on paper, and we can imagine different figures. Also, you can try one more technique called grattage. For this you need a piece of paper covered with wax or paraffin or you can use various wax crayons for shading the piece of paper, then the work will be even more interesting. Then cover it with ink. When the paper becomes dry, the real fun begins. You need to scratch a drawing with a sharp instrument. So, a very original work of art is obtained. One more way is to make impressions of various items on paper, after dipping them in paint. Try to draw using cotton buds or create an interesting pattern of dots alone. Also, you can offer your child to draw on a computer screen. To do this, you must first install a program that teaches how to draw. The main goal here is to keep your child interested, to make drawing lessons enjoyable and exciting, then it will be easier for him/her to learn.
The fourth point is to make a game out of the drawing lesson. For example, game tasks may include the following: draw a geometric figure and ask your child to finish it, thus, making this figure turn into another object. A circle can be turned into the sun by painting some rays of light; in a flower by painting a stem and petals; in a face by adding eyes, a nose and a mouth; in a car wheel by drawing a car. Then draw another shape, and let your child use his/her imagination by transforming this shape. Apart from playing with geometric shapes, another game is possible, too: show your child a few unfinished drawings, and let him/her finish them. For example, draw a table without legs, a dog without a tail, a cow without horns, a house without windows, and the child has to find what is missing and to finish the picture. These games help to develop imagination and creative thinking by children.
The fifth point is to develop your child’s artistic vision. It’s not just the ability to see shapes of objects, their colors and details, but also their imagery and expressiveness. Ask your child to think about what this or that object looks like and describe it. Draw his/her attention to beautiful landscapes or natural phenomena, interesting camera angles, unusual colors and color combinations in nature.
Your main objective is to motivate your child and spark a desire to invent and to create, to assure him/her that he/she will succeed. If your child sits down with a great desire to paint again and again, then you are on the right track. And the more your child practices in drawing and painting, the better will be the result. You should be patient, interested, open and friendly, then the results are sure to please you.
